Troyan Monastery — A Spiritual Journey

Troyan Monastery — A Spiritual Journey

After enjoying the healing embrace of the mineral pools in Chiflik and experiencing the comfort of Guesthouse Orion, you may feel the desire to diversify your vacation with a dose of culture and history. The Troyan region is not only a natural treasure but also a keeper of centuries-old Bulgarian traditions.

Just about 30 minutes of scenic driving from our guesthouse lies one of the holiest and most impressive places in Bulgaria – the Troyan Stavropegial Monastery "Assumption of the Virgin". Whether you are deeply religious, a history enthusiast, or simply an admirer of beautiful architecture, this Holy Monastery will leave a lasting impression on your heart.

Here is what makes Troyan Monastery a must-visit stop during your stay with us:

🏛 The Third Largest Monastery in Bulgaria

Located on the banks of the Cherni Osam River, surrounded by dense forests and majestic peaks, the monastery welcomes its guests with an incredible sense of peace. It was founded in the late 16th century by an unknown hermit monk who sought solitude in the then-inaccessible forests of the Balkans. Today, the monastery complex impresses with its Revival architecture, beautiful inner courtyards immersed in greenery and flowers, and spacious verandas.

🙏 The Miraculous Icon of the Holy Virgin Troeruchitsa

The greatest treasure of the monastery and the reason thousands of pilgrims flock here year-round is the icon of the Holy Virgin Troeruchitsa (Three-Handed). Legend tells that the icon was brought by an Athonite monk traveling to Wallachia. He stopped to spend the night at the monastery, but when he tried to continue his journey in the morning, his horse refused to move. After several unsuccessful attempts, the monk understood that the Mother of God wished the icon to remain forever in these lands.

It is believed that the icon has miraculous power and helps believers heal from serious illnesses and fulfill heartfelt prayers.

🎨 The Masterpieces of Zahari Zograf

If you are an art lover, the monastery cathedral will leave you breathless. It was entirely painted between 1847-1849 by one of the greatest Revival artists – Zahari Zograf.

His frescoes here are unique. In addition to traditional biblical scenes, pay special attention to the outer wall, where the famous "Wheel of Life" is painted – a philosophical view of the transience of human existence. Also, here Zahari Zograf left one of his rare self-portraits, along with portraits of the monastery brothers.

🦁 Refuge of the Apostle of Freedom

Troyan Monastery is not only a spiritual but also a revolutionary center. In the mid-19th century, Vasil Levski himself often found shelter here. In 1872, he established the only secret monastic revolutionary committee in the country at the monastery, led by Abbot Makarii.

During your visit to the monastery complex today, you can view Levski's preserved hiding place, which has been turned into a small museum. The feeling of stepping into the room where plans for Bulgaria's liberation were made is truly spine-tingling.

💡 Practical Tips from Your Hosts at Orion

  • How to get there: The journey from Chiflik to Oreshak village (where the monastery is located) takes about half an hour by car. The road is good and well-marked.
  • What to combine: Just before the monastery, in Oreshak village, is the National Exhibition of Arts and Crafts. We highly recommend stopping there – it is the only place in Bulgaria where works by master craftsmen from across the country are gathered. You can even buy authentic Troyan ceramics as a souvenir.
  • Visiting time: The monastery is open year-round. If you seek tranquility, avoid major Christian holidays (such as the Assumption on August 15), when thousands of people gather.
