Welcome to the heart of the Troyan Balkans! If you've already booked your stay at our guesthouse in Chiflik (or are just planning to do so), you probably know that our village is famous for its healing thermal springs. There's nothing better than immersing yourself in a warm pool while centuries-old beech forests tower around you.
But Chiflik offers much more than spa relaxation. The village is one of the best starting points for exploring Central Balkan National Park. To make your vacation truly unforgettable, we've selected the 5 best hiking trails in the area. Whether you're an experienced hiker seeking challenges on rocky ridges, or a family with children looking for an easy and pleasant walk – there's something for everyone here.
Lace up your boots, fill your water bottles, and let's hit the trails!
1. The Classic: From Haidushka Pesen Hut to Kozya Stena Hut
This is perhaps the most popular and beloved route, starting literally from Chiflik's "backyard".
The trail starts from Haidushka Pesen hut, which you can reach on foot (about 4 km from the village center on an asphalt road) or by car. From there, you enter the cool embrace of the ancient forest. The first part of the route is steep but exceptionally beautiful, passing by babbling mountain streams.
When you emerge above the forest belt, a breathtaking view of the Kozya Stena reserve will unfold before you. The hut itself is perched picturesquely on a rocky ledge. The area is known as one of the few places in Bulgaria where you can see blooming edelweiss in its natural habitat (please, just photograph it, don't pick it!).
- Starting point: Haidushka Pesen hut (above Chiflik village)
- Duration: About 2 - 2.5 hours one way
- Difficulty: Medium (steep sections in the forest)
- Suitable for: People with good physical fitness; older children
- Highlight: Unique rock formations of Kozya Stena reserve and the chance to see edelweiss
2. The Panoramic Trek: From Haidushka Pesen Hut to Ushite Peak and Eho Hut
If the route to Kozya Stena seems short and you're looking for a real mountain adventure, this is your choice. We start again from Haidushka Pesen hut, but this time we head towards the Kashka area and the main Balkan ridge.
The trail will take you to Ushite Peak (1637 m), from where 360-degree panoramas of Northern and Southern Bulgaria open up. From there, the route continues along the ridge to Eho hut, nestled between Kavardzhika and Yumruka peaks. This trek requires more endurance, but the views of the endless sea of mountain ranges are worth every drop of sweat. At Eho hut, you can have warm soup or mountain tea before heading back.
- Starting point: Haidushka Pesen hut
- Duration: About 3.5 - 4.5 hours one way
- Difficulty: High (requires good fitness and mountain experience)
- Suitable for: Experienced hikers and mountaineers
- Highlight: Walking along the Stara Planina ridge itself and impressive views of Vezhen and Yumruka peaks
3. Family Idyll: Eco-trail and Skoka Waterfall (near Kaleyitsa village)
For days when you just want to take a leisurely walk, breathe fresh air, and take beautiful photos without serious physical exertion, we recommend visiting the neighboring village of Kaleyitsa (about 25-30 minutes by car from Chiflik).
There you'll find a picturesque eco-trail leading to Skoka waterfall. The path winds along the Lopushnitsa river, crosses small wooden bridges and cool shadows. The waterfall itself has a water drop of about 12 meters, and below it forms a beautiful, crystal clear (and quite icy!) pool. In summer, the place is a true oasis. There are benches and tables, making it perfect for a family picnic.
- Starting point: End of Kaleyitsa village
- Duration: About 30-40 minutes easy walk from the parking area
- Difficulty: Very low
- Suitable for: Families with small children, elderly people, and photography enthusiasts
- Highlight: The coolness of the waterfall and convenient picnic spots
4. Walk in the Clouds: From Beklemeto to the Arch of Freedom
The Troyan Pass (Beklemeto) is a short drive from Chiflik and is the highest Balkan pass in Bulgaria. The drive there itself offers magnificent views, but the real experience begins when you get out of the car.
From the pass ridge, a wide and comfortable dirt road begins, leading to Goraltepе peak (1595 m), where the impressive "Arch of Freedom" monument rises. The walk is extremely pleasant, with minimal elevation change, but it feels like you're walking in the heavens. On a clear day, from the Arch you can see both the Danube River to the north and the Rhodopes to the south. If you have more energy, from there you can continue along the ridge to Orlovo Gnezdo hut or Dermenka hut.
- Starting point: Highest point of Beklemeto pass
- Duration: About 1 hour one way
- Difficulty: Low (wide open path)
- Suitable for: All ages, including families with children and dogs
- Highlight: The historical monument and endless horizon in both directions of Bulgaria
5. Spirituality and Nature: Troyan Monastery and Natural History Museum (Cherni Osam)
Although this is not a classic mountain trek, it's a must-do "tourist route" for every guest of the area. It's very close to Chiflik and is the perfect choice for the day when you want to rest from steep slopes.
Start with a visit to the Troyan Stavropegial Monastery "Assumption of the Virgin" – the third largest in Bulgaria, famous for the miraculous icon of St. Virgin Mary Troeruchitsa and the unique frescoes by Zahari Zograf.
After lighting a candle and enjoying the monastery courtyard, continue by car or on foot (there are paved alleys) to the nearby village of Cherni Osam. There awaits the Natural History Museum – a true hidden gem that will especially impress children. The museum has a rich exhibition of stuffed animals, birds, and insects that inhabit the Central Balkans. You can end the day with a walk along the Cherni Osam river.
- Starting point: Oreshak village (Troyan Monastery)
- Duration: Half-day excursion (combination of driving and walking)
- Difficulty: None
- Suitable for: Absolutely everyone
- Highlight: Cultural and historical heritage and learning about local flora and fauna
🎒 A Few Quick Tips from Your Hosts
To make your mountain experience safe and enjoyable, don't forget a few basic rules:
- Check the forecast: Weather in the Balkans can change in minutes. Always bring an outer layer, even in the height of summer.
- Shoes matter: Even for easier routes, opt for stable and closed shoes.
- Water and food: Most trails have fountains, but it's mandatory to have at least 1 liter of water per person, as well as energy food (nuts, chocolate, fruit).
